Batch File Rename

Rename many files at once with patterns and previews.

About Batch File Rename

Apply find-and-replace, prefixes, suffixes, sequential numbering, case changes and date stamps to a whole set of files, preview every old-to-new pair, then download the renamed set as a ZIP.

Renaming files one at a time is tolerable up to about ten and unbearable after that, and the files that need it usually arrive in hundreds.

Find and replace, prefixes, suffixes, numbering, case changes and dates.

How Batch File Rename works in your browser

Rules are applied in order to produce the new names, and the full before-and-after list is shown before anything happens. Renaming is easy to get wrong in a way that is tedious to undo, so previewing is not a convenience.

Collisions are detected rather than allowed. Two files that would end up with the same name is the failure that silently loses one of them, and it is caught before any rename is applied.

Sequential numbering is padded so names sort correctly — file-001 rather than file-1, because otherwise file-10 sorts before file-2 in every file manager and every script that reads the folder.

When to use it

  • Renaming a folder of camera files into something meaningful before archiving.
  • Applying a naming convention to documents for a client or a project.
  • Adding dates or sequence numbers across a batch of scans.
  • Stripping copy suffixes and download artefacts from a set of filenames.

Frequently asked questions

Can I see what will happen first?

Yes. Every old-to-new pair is previewed before anything is produced, so a rule that would collide or produce nonsense is visible in advance.

What rules can I apply?

Find and replace, prefixes, suffixes, sequential numbering, case changes and date stamps — combined in one pass rather than several.

Does it rename files on my disk?

No. A browser cannot rename files in place, so the renamed set is delivered as a ZIP for you to extract where you want it.
