About Excel (XLSX) Viewer

Open .xlsx and .xls workbooks in a virtualised spreadsheet grid. Switch between sheets, keep the header row pinned while you scroll, search across cells, sort by a column, inspect formulas and export any sheet to CSV.

Reading a spreadsheet should not require a spreadsheet application, and a workbook with a hundred thousand rows should not lock up the page.

Open .xlsx and .xls in a virtualised grid with working sheet tabs.

How Excel (XLSX) Viewer works in your browser

SheetJS parses the workbook in this tab, and the grid is virtualised: only the cells currently on screen exist as DOM elements, and they are recycled as you scroll. Rendering a hundred thousand rows at once would freeze any browser, so it never happens.

Cells display their computed values, which is what a workbook stores alongside each formula. You are reading the spreadsheet as it last calculated, not re-evaluating it.

This is a reader rather than an editor, and the trade is honest: it opens large files quickly and it will not recalculate. Charts, conditional formatting and macros are not rendered — the last of those is a feature rather than a limitation, since a macro is code and nothing here runs it.

When to use it

  • Reading a workbook on a machine with no spreadsheet application.
  • Opening a large export that a full application would take a long time to load.
  • Checking a spreadsheet from an unfamiliar sender without letting any macro run.
  • Reading a file of real records without uploading it to an online viewer.

Frequently asked questions

Does it handle very large workbooks?

Yes. The grid is virtualised, meaning only the cells currently on screen are rendered, so sheets with hundreds of thousands of rows scroll without freezing the page.

Can I see the formulas rather than the results?

Yes. Cells store both the formula and its last cached result, and you can inspect either. Formulas are shown as written, not recalculated.

Which spreadsheet formats can it open?

It reads .xlsx, .xls, .xlsm and .ods. Any sheet can be exported to CSV once open; for JSON, use the Excel to JSON tool.
