Excel to CSV

Export any sheet as a clean CSV file.

Try it: Export dates without swapping day and month

Download the sample workbook

  1. Open the workbook and select the Orders sheet.
  2. Export the sheet, then inspect the CSV in a text viewer before opening it in Excel.
  3. Check the row for order 00123. Its intended date is 9 March 2026; the next row is 3 September 2026.

The workbook also includes ISO date text for comparison. CSV contains no cell-type metadata. A spreadsheet can reinterpret dates and remove leading zeros when reopening it; import the identifier and ISO columns as text.

About Excel to CSV

Convert .xlsx or .xls workbooks to CSV. Choose which sheet to export, the delimiter and whether to keep the header row. Dates and numbers are written as the sheet displays them. Export every sheet at once as a ZIP.

CSV is what almost every system will accept, and converting to it is the usual last step before an import. It is also where spreadsheet data quietly goes wrong.

Choose the sheet, convert it, and see what the file will actually contain.

How Excel to CSV works in your browser

The workbook is parsed by SheetJS in this tab. Each sheet is read into a cell model and the selected one is written out as comma-separated values with proper quoting — fields containing commas, quotes or line breaks are quoted and escaped so the file parses correctly at the other end.

The important thing to understand is what CSV cannot carry. It is a text format with no notion of a cell type, so formulas are replaced by their computed values, number formatting disappears, and colours, merged cells, multiple sheets and column widths do not exist in the output.

Dates are the trap. A spreadsheet stores a date as a number with a display format attached, and CSV can carry only the rendered text. That text is then ambiguous — 03/04/2026 reads two ways — and a mistaken reading fails silently for any day above the twelfth while looking correct for the rest. Exporting in an unambiguous format is the fix.

When to use it

  • Preparing a contact or product list for import into a CRM, a shop or a mailing platform.
  • Handing data to a developer or a script that expects plain text.
  • Producing a diff-able file so changes between two versions can be reviewed in Git.
  • Converting a spreadsheet of real customer or employee records, where uploading it to a converter would mean disclosing all of them.

Frequently asked questions

My workbook has several sheets — which one is exported?

Whichever you choose, or all of them at once as separate files. CSV holds a single sheet by definition, so a multi-sheet workbook has to become multiple files.

How are dates handled?

They are written as the cell displays them; there is no date-format option here. If a column shows an ambiguous format such as 03/04/2026, change it to yyyy-mm-dd in the spreadsheet before exporting, because different tools reading the CSV will interpret the ambiguous form differently.

Can I use a semicolon instead of a comma?

Yes. The delimiter is configurable, which is necessary for locales where the comma is the decimal separator.
