Excel Formula Viewer

List every formula in a workbook with its cell and result.

About Excel Formula Viewer

Audit a workbook by listing every formula it contains alongside its cell reference, sheet, cached result and the functions it uses. Search for a function name to find every place it appears, across the whole workbook or one sheet at a time.

A spreadsheet shows you results. The formulas producing them are hidden one cell at a time, which is no way to audit a workbook somebody else built.

List every formula in the file alongside its cell reference and sheet.

How Excel Formula Viewer works in your browser

SheetJS preserves the formula string on each cell as well as its computed value, so the workbook can be walked and every formula collected with its address and sheet name. What you get is the logic of the workbook as a list rather than as something to hunt for.

Seeing them together is what makes errors visible. A column where one cell in two hundred has been overtyped with a constant is invisible on the grid and obvious in a list, and it is one of the most common causes of a spreadsheet that quietly gives the wrong answer.

The formulas are read as text rather than evaluated. This is an audit of what the workbook says it does, which is the right question when you are reviewing someone else’s model rather than running it.

When to use it

  • Auditing a financial model you inherited and did not write.
  • Finding hard-coded values overtyped into a calculated column.
  • Documenting how a workbook works before rebuilding it in something else.
  • Checking a spreadsheet before relying on its figures in a report.

Frequently asked questions

What is this for?

Auditing. It lists every formula in a workbook with its cell reference, sheet, cached result and the functions used, so you can see how a spreadsheet actually computes.

Can I find everywhere a function is used?

Yes. Search for a function name — VLOOKUP, say — to find every cell that calls it, which is how you assess the impact of changing an approach.

Does it recalculate the formulas?

No. It shows the formula as written and the result last saved by Excel, rather than evaluating anything itself.
