Remove Blank Rows & Columns

Delete empty rows, columns and trailing whitespace.

About Remove Blank Rows & Columns

Strip out fully blank rows and columns, rows where only whitespace remains, and the empty region that spreadsheet exports so often leave at the bottom right of a sheet.

Empty rows break more than they look like they should. Many spreadsheet operations treat a blank row as the end of the data, so a sort or a filter silently applies to the top section only.

Strip empty rows and columns, including the ones that only look empty.

How Remove Blank Rows & Columns works in your browser

A row is removed when every cell in it is empty after trimming — which is the important detail, because a row containing a single space is not blank to a spreadsheet and is blank to a human reading the screen. Those are exactly the rows that break a sort while appearing to be nothing.

Empty columns are handled the same way, and both usually arrive from the same source: an export padded out to a fixed grid, or a file where somebody deleted content without deleting the rows.

One case deserves thought before you run it. A blank row left deliberately as a visual separator between sections carries meaning, and removing it loses that. A sheet laid out for reading rather than for processing may need restructuring instead of cleaning.

When to use it

  • Fixing a sheet where sorting or filtering only affects part of the data.
  • Cleaning an export padded out with empty rows and columns.
  • Preparing a file for import into a system that rejects blank records.
  • Shrinking a workbook whose used range extends far beyond its actual content.

Frequently asked questions

Does it catch rows that only look empty?

Yes. Rows containing nothing but spaces are removed as well as genuinely empty ones, which is the usual result of a sloppy export.

What is the empty region at the bottom of my sheet?

Spreadsheet exports often leave a large block of used-but-blank cells past the real data, which inflates file size and confuses ranges. That region is stripped too.

Does it remove blank columns as well?

Yes, both. A column with a header but no values can be removed along with fully empty ones.
