About Text to Diagram

Type Mermaid or a simple indented outline and watch the diagram redraw as you type. Export SVG or PNG. An outline can also be saved as JSON and opened in Diagram Studio to fine-tune by hand. PlantUML is not supported.

Dragging boxes is slow, and a diagram defined as text can be version-controlled, reviewed in a pull request and regenerated when the system changes.

How Text to Diagram works in your browser

The text is parsed and laid out automatically — you describe what connects to what, and positioning is computed rather than chosen. That is the trade: less control over the exact look, and no manual rearranging when a node is added.

The diagram redraws as you type, which makes the syntax easy to learn by experiment rather than by reading a specification.

Because the source is text, it belongs in the repository next to the thing it documents. A diagram stored as a PNG goes stale silently; one stored as a few lines of text gets updated in the same commit as the change it describes.

When to use it

  • Keeping architecture diagrams in version control alongside the code.
  • Generating a flowchart from a description without positioning anything by hand.
  • Producing a sequence or state diagram for documentation.
  • Drafting a diagram quickly during a discussion where dragging shapes is too slow.

Frequently asked questions

Which syntaxes can I write in?

Mermaid, or a simple indented outline when you do not want to learn a syntax at all. PlantUML source is not understood; rewrite it as Mermaid first.

Do I have to press a button to see the result?

No. The diagram redraws as you type, so a syntax mistake shows immediately rather than after a render step.

Can I adjust the layout by hand afterwards?

For an outline, yes: download it as JSON and open that file in Diagram Studio to move things around. A Mermaid diagram is exported as a finished SVG or PNG and cannot be edited on the canvas.
