About HTML to Markdown

Turn an HTML file or pasted markup into readable Markdown, mapping headings, links, images, lists, tables and code while dropping presentational wrappers and inline styles.

Getting content out of a web page usually means pasting it and then deleting the formatting that came along. Converting to Markdown does that as one deliberate step.

Headings, links, images, lists and tables all map across.

  • Processed on your deviceEverything you open or type here is handled by this page and never uploaded anywhere.
  • No queue, no limitsNothing waits on a server, so the only limit is your own hardware.
  • No account neededNo sign-up and no email address required.

How HTML to Markdown works in your browser

The markup is parsed with the browser’s own DOM parser inside an inert document — nothing runs, and no image or stylesheet is fetched — and the resulting tree is walked to produce Markdown from the structure rather than from the text.

Working from the parsed tree is what makes the output clean. Presentational wrappers, inline styles and layout divs have no Markdown equivalent and are dropped; what survives is the content and its structure, which is what you wanted.

Constructs Markdown cannot express — nested tables, forms, iframes, arbitrary attributes — are the honest limit. They are simplified rather than reproduced with raw HTML that would defeat the point of converting.

When to use it

  • Moving content from a website or CMS into a repository or wiki.
  • Cleaning up copied web content into plain, portable text.
  • Turning an exported HTML article into a post for a static site.
  • Getting a diff-able version of a page for tracking changes over time.

Frequently asked questions

What happens to all the divs and inline styles?

Presentational wrappers and inline styling are dropped. Headings, links, images, lists, tables and code are mapped to their Markdown equivalents; the rest becomes plain text.

Can I paste markup instead of a file?

Yes. Pasting is often easier when you are lifting a section out of a page rather than converting a whole document.

Are tables converted?

Yes, into Markdown tables — though very complex tables with merged cells have no Markdown equivalent and are simplified.
