Word to Text
Strip all formatting down to plain text.
About Word to Text
Extract the raw text of a Word document with paragraph structure preserved and everything else discarded. Useful for diffing, indexing or feeding a document into another tool.
Sometimes the words are all you need, and every layer of formatting between you and them is in the way.

How Word to Text works in your browser
The document’s visible text is extracted in reading order and written out as plain text, with paragraph breaks kept so the result is still readable rather than one continuous block.
Everything presentational is discarded: fonts, sizes, colours, tables reduced to their cell contents, images gone entirely because a picture has no text to extract. That is the intent — plain text is a format with no way to express any of it.
Content that sits outside the main body — headers, footers, footnotes, comments — is not part of the reading flow and is not included here. If you need those as well, the dedicated text extractor reaches into the container for them.
When to use it
Feeding a document into a script, a search index or a command-line tool. Getting a clean copy to paste somewhere that would otherwise inherit Word’s formatting. Producing a plain-text archive copy that will still be readable in twenty years. Counting, diffing or grepping the contents of a document with ordinary text tools.
Frequently asked questions
What exactly is kept?
The words and the paragraph breaks. Fonts, colours, tables, images and every other form of styling are discarded, which is the point when you want content without presentation.
Why would I want plain text?
For diffing two versions, feeding a document into a search index or another tool, or pasting somewhere that would otherwise inherit unwanted Word formatting.
Does it include headers and footers?
No — this extracts the main body. Use Extract Text from Word when you also need headers, footers, footnotes and comments.
