About Markdown to Word

Convert Markdown into a Word document that uses genuine Heading 1–6, List Paragraph and Quote styles, so the result stays editable and picks up your organisation’s theme.

A colleague who will comment on your document needs Word, not Markdown. Pasting the source in gives them hashes and asterisks.

How Markdown to Word works in your browser

Marked’s tokens become a structured document model, and the .docx writer maps that model onto Word’s own built-in styles — Heading 1 to 6, Quote, List Paragraph — rather than hard-coding font sizes to imitate them.

That distinction is what makes the output genuinely useful. A real Heading 2 appears in Word’s navigation pane, generates a working table of contents, and takes on the theme of any template the document is dropped into. A paragraph made large and bold does none of those things.

Tables keep their structure and their alignment, and lists renumber themselves when edited, because both are written as real Word constructs rather than as text that looks like them.

When to use it

  • Sending Markdown-authored content to someone who works in Word and will track changes.
  • Producing a document that has to go into a corporate template.
  • Handing notes to a colleague who does not use Markdown and should not have to.
  • Converting a draft locally rather than through a service that keeps a copy.

Frequently asked questions

Will the result stay editable in Word?

Yes, and properly so. It uses genuine Heading 1–6, List Paragraph and Quote styles, so the document picks up your organisation's theme rather than arriving as hard-coded formatting.

Why does using real styles matter?

Because styled headings drive the navigation pane, automatic tables of contents and any corporate template. Text merely made large and bold does none of that.

What happens to code blocks?

They are carried across as monospaced blocks, keeping them visually distinct from body text.
